Updated August 2026. A South Florida front door has to do three jobs: keep debris out in a storm, lock like it means it, and not look like a bunker. Impact-rated entry doors are the usual spec when the house is in a wind-borne debris region. Statewide Windows & Doors quotes the door as part of the same opening package as the windows.
Quick answer
If the rest of the house is going impact, the front door should too. A shutter on the entry is a workable backup only if someone is actually there to close it. An impact entry door stays in place year-round, takes a deadbolt, and is what most buyers and insurers expect to see on a completed opening-protection job.
What “impact” means on an entry door
- The assembly (slab, frame, glass if any, and hardware as tested) has a Miami-Dade NOA or Florida Product Approval for the size and design pressure on that opening.
- Laminated glass in sidelites and door lites is the impact glazing, not a decorative pane with film on it.
- The install has to match the approval: anchors, threshold, and the CBS waterproofing at the opening. A pretty door in a wet buck still leaks.
Security, style, and energy (without the brochure)
- Security: A tested impact slab and multi-point or reinforced lockset is harder to kick than a hollow builder door. It is not a safe. Pair it with a real strike and a viewer or camera if that is the concern.
- Style: Fiberglass and some aluminum systems take a wide range of panel looks. Match the existing house, not a catalog hero shot. HOA color rules still apply.
- Heat: A tight door with insulated slab and Low-E lites helps the AC. It will not replace the windows.
- Salt and sun: Coastal hardware and finishes matter. Ask what is on the spec, not just the door brand on the brochure.
What to put on the quote
- NOA or FL# for the exact door, sidelites, and transom
- Design pressure for that opening
- Threshold and exterior landing detail
- Who is waterproofing the CBS opening
- Permit in the price

FAQ
Can I keep my current door and only do the windows?
You can. The opening-protection story for insurance and code is weaker if the front door is still a non-rated unit. Ask the building official and your carrier before you assume it is fine.
Do I need sidelites to be impact too?
If they are glazed openings, they need the same protection path as the door. Mismatched lites are a common fail on inspection.
Will this raise resale?
Buyers in South Florida notice a completed impact package. Do not count on a specific dollar bump. Count on a cleaner inspection and a door that matches the windows.
