Updated August 2026. Florida hurricane season is June through November. This is the opening-protection version of a prep list. Statewide Windows & Doors can spec the glass, doors, and roof. The rest is yours: gutters, trees, kit, insurance papers.

Openings

  • If you have impact windows and doors, walk them. Cracked laminate, failed sealant, or a door that will not latch is a job, not a "it will be fine."
  • If you still have shutters or panels, confirm they are approved, they fit, and you can actually close them. An open shutter is not protection. See impact vs shutters.
  • Garage door counts as an opening. A non-rated door is a large hole.
  • One leftover non-rated slider still counts. See every window.

Roof and yard

  • Loose tile, shingle, or flashing gets worse in wind. Fix it before the named storm, not during.
  • Clear gutters and downspouts.
  • Trim trees that can hit the house. Bring in furniture, grills, and bins.

Paper and kit

  • Wind-mitigation report and product approvals in a waterproof folder, plus ID and insurance.
  • Ask your carrier what they need after an opening-protection job. Do not assume the discount posted itself.
  • Water, meds, flashlights, chargers. Generator only if you know how to run it outdoors.
  • My Safe Florida Home is advertising inspections and grants again as of this update. Confirm at mysafeflhome.com. Guide: MSFH.

FAQ

Is the house hurricane-proof if the windows are impact?

No. Impact glass is opening protection. Roof, garage, and a closed envelope still matter.

Can I wait until a storm is named?

Lead times and permit offices do not care about your cone. Do the openings in the off-season if you can.
