A complete impact window typically costs $1,000 to $3,000 per window installed, not a few hundred dollars a pane. Cheap can mean a real sale on a code-legal unit. It can also mean a price that will not pass permit, or a unit that is impact-labeled on paper and incomplete in the opening. The question is not whether the number is low. It is whether this spec matches what this house needs.

What a low quote often leaves out

Price moves with glass makeup, frame, size, design pressure, energy coatings, and how the unit is set. The lowest number in a stack of quotes is often the one that dropped one of those. A complete quote should name:

  • The product line and the Florida Product Approval or Miami-Dade NOA
  • Design pressure for that size and configuration, not a brochure rating from a smaller lite
  • What is included: unit, labor, waterproofing, stucco patch, permit, haul-away
  • Who is on the house for install, not only who sold the job

Design pressure is not a brand insult

Design pressure is the tested wind load for that assembly. South Florida openings, especially in Miami-Dade and Broward (the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone), need the rating that matches the house, the size, and the configuration. Products used in the HVHZ must be approved for HVHZ use, which may be a Miami-Dade NOA or a Florida Product Approval approved for the HVHZ.

A cheaper unit can be fully legal if the approval and design pressure fit. A cheaper unit can also be a smaller-lite rating applied to a bigger opening. Read the approval. Do not assume every low number is fake, and do not assume every high number is better glass. Compare the published approval and the opening spec.

Install is where a cheap job actually fails

Impact-resistant glass can crack when struck. The laminated interlayer is designed to hold broken glass together and resist penetration, helping protect the building envelope. It is not hurricane-proof. A correct install is part of that performance.

Insurance and “budget zones”

Wind-mitigation credits depend on your carrier, the form, and what was actually installed. A cheap window does not automatically void a discount, and an expensive one does not automatically create one. Ask the insurer what documentation they want, then match the product to that.

Florida outside the HVHZ still has a code. “We are not in Miami, so cheaper is fine” is not a plan. The product still has to be approved for the job.

When a lower price is worth it

  • The approval number is on the quote and matches the opening
  • Design pressure, glass, and frame are the same job you compared to other quotes
  • Install, waterproofing, and permit are in writing
  • You are not substituting non-impact glass to hit a teaser price
